  • I have a maintainer charger for my NAA battery which says it should have a full charge on the battery before using it. My voltmeter reads 12.22 volts now. New, the battery tested at 13.5 volts. Should I put a slow charge on it before hooking up the maintainer charger for the winter or would it be dangerous to charge a battery that still registers 12.22 volts?

  • Interesting timing of this topic. My son and I are installing home generators and an Optima was suggested for the starting source. My son did some research and said (today) Optima closed US plant around 2009 and opened in Mexico. I have not seen source but he claimed quality has fallen off and prices increased since then.

  • I don't believe you will find the maintainer will add any charge to the battery. Certainly not enough over night to see on a meter. From my experience and what I read you need to charge it first.

  • Measuring your car batteryís voltage can be a great way to determine how charged your battery might be. The ideal car battery voltage range will provide you with a relevant interval according to which you can measure precisely what the voltage says about the batteryís current charge. A perfect voltage with the engine running is between 13.7 and 14.7V. With the engine off, you should get a reading of 12.6 volts. If the battery isnít fully charged, it will diminish to 12.4V at 75%, 12V when itís only operating at 25%, and down to 11.9V when itís completely discharged. This data and the way it relates to the design of your battery should provide you with some useful insight into the functioning capacity of your car battery.
