  • i have a 1952 8 n which keeps losing steering lubrication. remove the plug on the steering column fill with oil and deal with the mess ( seems to be leaking at the sector shaft seals ). I have seen the how to sections here but i am confused. The manual on the late model column shows a fill plug at the base of the steering gear housing. Mine has a fill plug on the engine side of the steering tube near the top. Also conflicting views on original style oil versus grease and grease fittings.Any help would be appreciated.

  • Don’t go by the Operator’s Manual. It says to pull acorn nut off and pour hydraulic o il down the steering shaft. That will only get you a mess and wasted oil. The steering gear lube ports are on the RH side of the steering shaft behind the dash on both styles. The early box uses a 1/4" NPT plug and the late box uses a 7/16 hex bolt. Both still are not easy to get oil into. I modified some for both with new NPT plugs and new hex bolts then drilled thru and tapped out to insert Zerk fittings to make lubrication a much cleaner and easier method. I also use cornhead grease but some don’t like that. I have no issues with it so to each his own. Chances are the bearings and seals are gone so a steering box rebuild is in your future.

EARLY 8N BOX USES A 1/4” NPT PLUG; ZERK IS MODIFIED:

LATER 8N BOX USES A 7/16-14 HEX BOLT; ZERK IS MODIFIED:
