  • I have a 1949 8n over the winter I tuned it completely I took it out to scrape the road and it works great going downhill but going uphill it seems to have a little less power and backfires sometimes. I would appreciate any ideas on what this might be.

  • In addition to what others have said, a lean mixture can cause a backfire. Also an error in timing.

  • check the simple stuff first as John said: firing order.

    " I tuned it completely"

What did you set the points at?

Did you set the timing after you set the points?

  • Check #3 and #4 sparkplug wires. They often get reversed. Firing order is 1-2-4-3.
