  • so here we go.
1947 8n13325 steering end play adjustment.
Looking at owners manual and shop. I don't see the triangular plate with lock nut and sector adjusting screw R.H. Fig 33 Page 68 owners manual.
I only see a slotted set screw in the housing R.H., no locking nut. JERRY RIG???

  • Tony-
I doubt somebody hack-mastered your steering box but then anything is possible I suppose. Like Steve D. said, you are looking at the wrong OPERATOR’S MANUAL for an early 8N. Page 68 shows the late (after s/n 263843) steering box, Page 64 has the early (before s/n 263843) –see PIX below. Shown are early and late manuals, the I&T FO-4 Manual, and my lube modification additions to both. You can try adjusting per manuals but 9 times out 10 the steering gear is simply worn out. Lube won’t help much if at all. The steering boxes were one of those features (the other is the hydraulic pump) that were rarely maintained properly and fell under the category, “…if it ain’t broke…”. Retired 8N guru John Smith once said if he had a choice to rebuild an early 8N box, he wouldn’t and just replace it with a late box. The first 8N OWNER MANUAL was issued in July, 1947, technically the 1948 8N Model, as they were released then, and good thru s/n 263843. In April, 1950, many changes came to the 8N and one was the later steering box at s/n 263843. The 8N manuals show to pour oil down the steering wheel shaft under the acorn nut but that is wrong –do that and you end up with a mess.

FORD TRACTOR STEERING BOX –AFTER S/N 216988 FROM THE I&T FO-4 MANUAL:

EARLY 8N BOX USES A 1/4” NPT PLUG; ZERK IS MY MODIFIED ADDITION:

LATER 8N BOX USES A 7/16-14 HEX BOLT; ZERK IS MY MODIFIED ADDITION:

  • Your 47 vintage (1948 model) 8N has a steering box that is play adjusted by removing the bolts holding the pitman
shaft bearings and seals and rotating them to take out the play. They are eccentric bored. The triangular plate/set screw adjustment is on the later 51-52 8N's. Most people recommend changing out the early steering box to the later version. I have rebuilt my original 47 8N box and it works well, but it was a real chore that took three tries to get the leaking stopped.
