  • Hi all. Iím new to old tractors, really like the Nís and want a project. Iíve found a 2N that Iím going to look at. Itís not running but the owner says the engine isnít locked up. Can any of you tell me some things I should pay special attention to? Thanks

  • Welcome aboard! Evaluate your needs. Have you ever worked on an old tractor before, and are you relatively mechanically inclined? If you are looking for a basic, easy, fun, project to learn from, the early N's are perfect. The flat-head Ford 4-CYL is pretty simple and parts are available. These old N's are great little workhorses as well. They can do large mowing area, brushogging, snow and dirt moving, small garden to large acreage tillage and planting too. The 9N and 2N are basically the same tractor, made from '39 thru '47 with few minor differences. These models have a 3-Speed Trans; DRAFT CONTROL only; and originally came with no running boards -just a few notables. The 8N was released in July, 1947 and now had a 4-Speed trans, new steering, and added POSITION CONTROL to the hydraulic system. There are many things to know on either model. Do you have any manuals? I advise to get some manuals first and read up what you are getting into. The CLYMER/I&T FO-4 Manual and the '39-'53 MPC (Master Parts Catalog) are two essential tools to start with. There are a lot of things to look at when buying a used tractor. Don't assume because the seller tells you "the engine isn't locked up" it runs and there are no other issues. We have a HOW-TO's forum with a ton of info, one being what to inspect when buying used. Some guys slap some new paint on and a new battery to entice potential buyers but paint doesn't make it run and there could be a lot of major unforeseen issues with it. New paint can hide oil leaks and welds to the block. The FORD electrical system was 6V/POS GRN but the 9N/2n models differ from the later 8N model in the system components. Ask questions, read the manuals, and post often with questions. If you have a specific question, you can also look in the ARCHIVES forum as most all questions have been asked before.
