  • I am rebuilding a 48 8n and I am at the engine rebuild step. I just need some clarification on the proper way to measure the gear width. ( 3/4 or 9/16 ) With calipers, do i measure from the overall length (width) of the oil pump gear or the width from pitch to pitch between the teeth? AS ALWAYS throw in any other tips for a young man to be successful in this rebuild. This is my first time inside a motor but i am very organized and it looks rather simple. Thanks guys

  • Width! Want to be sure the space between the pickup tube flange face and the gear face is minimized. Should be flush with the face of the pump, clearance only that of the gasket thickness. Best gasket (or used to be) was from New Holland, others were thicker. Some use a supermarket shopping bag material to ensure oil pressure is maintained.
