  • 8N engine misses
  • Earlier this year I performed a tune up (points, plugs, condenser, rotor, cap, new wires) on my old 1950 8N (side mount dist.) and it ran like it hasn't in years.

Unfortunately it didn't last long. I was driving it back after grading my driveway when it started sputtering and missing. After parking it I started checking for obvious things such as loose plug wires, or perhaps points had shifted.

I was surprised to find the rotor broken inside the cap. It was a cheap Asian make but I didn't expect that. I had another so I put it on and it broke on start up. The points were fine.

I bought an American made rotor, installed it, and crossed my fingers. It started and ran, no breakage, but now misses slightly, has low power and will only run in first gear without killing the engine.

I need some advise on where to look next...Distributor?

  • Generally if the rotor broke, twice now? Where is the crack in the dist cap? You might also be able to remove the cap and look for a carbon track between the plug wire lugs inside the cap. Might have it, might not. A busted rotor can also damage the cap.

  • Whoops. Once it broke. This is what happens when you wake up at 2.30 Am and the brain won't let the body go back to bed. Notice, the brain is working too well either, but sleep is not an option either.

  • Your brain was working fine. You got to overthinking it! He did state he broke two of them.

  • That just proves I am not awake. Oh well. Today will be busy enough and maybe tonight I can sleep longer.

  • Thanks for thinking about my problem. After the second one broke, I replaced the cap and rotor. No more breakage but, as stated, now misses consistently.

Could it be a worn distributor bushing? (causing the distributor shaft to wobble?)

  • Measure the point gap on all four lobes. That will show the wobble. Of course should be none.

  • Jack, thanks for the suggestion. That makes so much sense!.. I'll definitely check a complete rotation of the distributor.

Any other thoughts on my missing/ power loss issue?

    Many Thanks,

  • That seems extremely logical !.. I'll check that. If the tolerance is tight, can you think of any other reasons for my missing and low power?

    Thanks Jack !

  • The carbon pile fell out of the old dist cap and is rolling around the inside of the dist. .

Plug wire backed out when replacing the cap.
    Coil wire backed out.

Go out tonight and fire it up in the dark. See any sparks?
