  • Key Fully Intact But Wont Go Into Ignition Switch
  • Hello All,
I have an 8N Tractor that was running fine for not having maintenance performed until I came along. The key wont go into the ignition now but it did a week ago when I last drove it. The person who reported to me though maybe the key broke off inside but it is fully intact. Should I disconnect the switch, and take it off to look to see what is going on. Do you have any pointers?

  • 1. The 8N ignition switch was originally mounted recessed under the left side of the hood.
Is that where your switch is located?
    2. If it is in a different location, is it exposed to moisture and freezing temperature?
    3. Has someone somehow inserted a foreign object into the switch?
    4. Switchs are not difficult to replace if all else fails.
    5. Let us know what you did to fix it.

  • Yes, it is on the bottom left of the hood. The barn it is in does get cold as it's not heated so yes it is exposed to cold/freezing but it is indoors. No one should have inserted a foreign object but there have been contractors working on the barn and moving it around. I am thinking one of them may have been too rough with the key. Do they sell the original switch of a 6 volt battery or just new versions?

  • OK, so the key did not break off and was working a week ago. Did you try inserting it the opposite way? It will only insert one way. There is nothing you can "take off" or take apart -OEM switch is sealed and all 48-64 switches same and take the same key so can you try a different key? Also try a blast of WD-40 in key hole. If none of these work, just buy a new one. Here ya go'''
