  • I drove an 8N regularly 40 years ago...now I'm a newbie owner. I've acquired a 1946 2N to both restore over time and use in the immediate future. The tractor has been converted to 12V with a new 1-wire alternator but the wiring on the tractor looks nothing like any of the diagrams on your website. It's almost as if someone just tried anything that worked. I've read through numerous 12V conversion articles and still cant decide what resistor setup I need. The original OEM thermal resistor was completely fried and bypassed. There is one obviously new white ceramic resister inline with the coil. I believe I have it wired correctly now (thanks to your online resources!!) but not sure of the resistance requirements. I've seen a few references to testing the coil and total system resistance but not clear on the process. Appreciate any guidance.

  • Sooner or later they all come home to a FORD! If you follow the tractor web sites daily, you'll find a least one or two posts about a non-starting tractor. It is a fact that 99.98% of these non-starting tractors are due to mucked up wiring and almost always are due to somebody doing their own 'farmerized' 12V conversion. Regardless if 6V or 12V if the system isn't wired correctly for each setup, there will be non-starting issues. There's nothing wrong with a12V conversion, but also there's nothing wrong with the OEM 6V/POS GRN system either. You'll find that most 12V switch jobs are done because guys do not understand the 6V/POS GRN setup and when an issue pops up, they subscribe to the myth that they must convert it over to 12V. First, did you try the excellent Wiring Pictograms resident wiring guru JMOR has in our HOW-TO's/Electrical forum? Here's the link to download a FREE copy and keep in your barn/tractor shed, or workbench. A 2N means you have the front mount distributor; and with a 12V switch over job you need the OEM Ballast Resistor in the circuit too. If your coil is 6V, you will need to add an inline 1-OHM ceramic resistor as well but if you get a 12V coil the external resistor is omitted. the 1-wire Delco alternator is perfect but make sure you get the correct fan belt and have a tensioning device to maintain proper belt tension in order to charge the battery. You also will need to get a 12V GRP 25 or 35 battery AND 12V cables -like on your car -as the 6V cables are thicker/heavier. The roundcan cutout circuit gets eliminated when you swap out the generator for the alternator. The starter motor remains as is - 1-Wire and NO SOLENOID. Ignition switch and the neutral safety starter pushbutton remain as is and the AMMETER can be kept or some guys like to swap out for a voltmeter. I'd prefer both but if I had to keep only one I'd choose the Ammeter. You need a version of Adobe or equivalent to open a pdf document and you can get a free download in out HOW-TOs as well. For reference I put the OEM 9N/2N 6V wiring diagrams up just to see what is what. Hope this clarifies and helps you out.

    Remember, the front mount distributor is only set one correct way on engine. Get it off and it breaks the base. Point gap set .015"-.018". Timing set static on your bench with offset tang. Spark plug (Champion H12 or AUTOLITE 437) set .025"-028". The firing order is 1,2.4,3 CCW. There is no Ford manual that details a 12V conversion. They just weren't done nor needed. JMOR has more 12V's than just the one shown here.

  • Nothing wrong with what Tim has put together however I would take one exception.
    True the 6 volt cables are heavier. If they are in good shape LEAVE THEM! They will be an assist rather than a detriment.

  • It's not that hard.

    12v coil and the oem ballast resistor, no ceramic resistor, is all you need .
