  • First time I have not been able to pull start my Ford 660.engine will turn over with the key. Smell burning wire.the cable from the negative post to starter button is hot.can you tell from this little bit of information what my problem could be?by starter button i mean the one below the battery not the one by the shifter.

  • Sounds like a loose connection.
Clean and tighten all main connections.
    A good ground is key.

  • Do the battery cables have good end clamps, or do they the have the clamp on ends? Those get dirty & corroded & don't make good contact.

  • For a hot battery cable I would first check for loose or corroded connection, and make sure the cable does not have internal unseen corrosion. Also I would want the ground cable to go to the heavy main frame of the tractor as near to the starter as possible and not to a light metal framework around a tool box, hood or instrument panel that has to go through corroded rusty bolt connections to get to a good ground.

The ground cable connection to the frame is often the most overlooked and neglected part of the electrical system.

Also make sure battery posts and cable clamps are clean and making good contact

  • Explain your system, is it 6V/POS GRN or a 12V/NEG GRN switch out job? There is only one starter button - the neutral safety pushbutton by the shifter. The top of the starter motor has the SOLENOID, a relay. Burnt wires have a distinctive smell and should be a huge clue something is wrong and should shut down the system at once. Mucked up wiring would be a likely cause so get out your Essential Manuals, disconnect battery and lighting circuit, verify entire wiring with a VOM set to Continuity. Take no shortcuts.
