  • Gear box lube
  • I have a Ford model 951 brush hog (5ft). I am wanting to change the gear lubricant. The manual calls for any of the following: Sunoco 850AEP, Gulf Mining HD Lube, Mobile EP023 or NLGI grade 000 EP grease. I aven't really found anything other than large drums or pails. I really only need a few quarts. I would appreciate anyone's input as to what an equivalent would be?

  • You can get "corn head grease" at local John Deere dealer or by the case at shoup.
    It is oo or ooo.

  • I've used Napa Premium 80w-90 gear oil for decades in my '82 Covington Cutter and 2004 Land Pride rotary cutters and never had a problem with the gear box in either mower. You can get it in quart bottles. I think that Tractor Supply has their version but you have to buy it in a 6-pack.

  • I think 80-w-90 is too thin for my gearbox.

  • Is your gearbox leaking?

  • Right now,no. I have a feeling it might after puting 80w-90 in it which is much thinner than what is in the gearbox now.

  • What weight gear oil is in there now?

  • Whatever was put in there originally. Manual says NLGI HD 000 grease. That's thicker but I cannot find it.

  • Then I would take Dean's suggestion to get the John Deere Corn Head grease. Many Ford N tractor owners have used that in leaky steering gear boxes with success.
