  • I own a 1952 8N. I've own it since 1964. It has 647 hours on the proof meter. Still has all the OEM parts, except the battery, and front and rear tires. Runs like it was new with the exception a noise ...growling, whining, or such when I let the clutch out to drive the tractor. This all started about a year ago when mowing with a finishing mower.
Here what I think is the problem. When the tractor engine is running, and I have it in "neutral" and engine idling, there is no "noise" when I let out the clutch. When I put it in gear. ( no matter which one) the let the clutch out there is this growling noise. The noise stops when I push down on the clutch pedal. I'm thinking it is a "throw-out bearing that has gone bad.
    What are your thoughts?

  • Bearing noise not throw out bearing. Pilot, input shaft, or in main trans bearing. Splitting tractor will need to happen. It will only get worse over time

  • Sounds like a pilot bearing problem.

  • A bad Throw out bearing would make noise when you push the clutch down, it's out of use when you let it out to move the tractor.
