  • 1949 8n axle shim placement
  • I’m replacing rear axle seal as it was leaking. It has metal shims of different thicknesses. When i took apart all 4 shims were behind the dust plate. The book shows different locations when putting back together. Anybody know the determinig process as to where these go. I ordered new ones and they are all the same thickness. They also take both tires off and turn axles should rotate different directions and that if not spaced properly axles will weld themselves together inside. Any help is appreciated

  • As Dean mentioned, the I&T FO-4 will give you info on the shim placement. We also have a tutorial in our How-To's section that covers the full job.

  • Tough to coach one through that in a chat forum. Probably should get an I & T manual.

All of the replacement shims that I have seen for the last 10-15 years have been paper. Didn't know that steel ones were still available.
