  • Ford 8N / Deland, FL - looking for guidance - please
  • Hello from Deland, FL. We have a 1947 (??) Ford 8N, with a front-mounted distributor (unfortunately). She is running; however, she pops-n-spits at high RPM. I have changed or tinkered with the plugs, points/condenser, put a Chinese carburetor on, plus several other parts. I feel as though she needs a little tweaking here and there, but nothing too serious. I am frustrated with her and refuse to guess and continue to throw parts at her. I am looking for a mentor (mechanic), an 8N enthusiast, who is willing to assist me, help me learn, with the goal of getting this hobby-tractor up and running.
I can trailer the tractor. Was hoping to find someone in the Deland area, or within ~ 50 miles of Deland or Orlando.
Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you. Gerald Lane. Cell: (407) 404-1986. Email - Gerald.Lane531@gmail.com

  • You didn't mention ignition wires which could be breaking down. In addition, I would make sure the fuel filter screens are clear. There's a couple I believe. Also, make sure you are using Champion H-12 plugs gapped at .025. Finally, check and make sure the distributor is not worn. If there is excessive sideway slop of the distrubutor, you will never get a uniform point gap for each of the four lobes.

  • I suggest doing a compression test on the engine. This will give you a good idea of the engines overall health and hopefully help you better diagnose your problem before chasing more parts. That would be my approach-just saying.
