Tractor stalling
Have about 20 hrs on my new to me 49 8n, ran perfectly. Housed under roof. Started to stutter and die after about 1 hrs into hogging. Started back up and died stuttered and died again and again. opened fuel shutoff about 12 turns, shut down and opened 2 turns. Ran another hour perfectly, then started doing same. Ideas appreciated

Re: Tractor stalling
One way to diagnose fuel starvation as your problem is to take a pint jar, remove the drain bolt from the carb's fuel bowl, and you should see a continuous, strong stream of gas that should fill the jar in a minute or so. If it doesn't, it can indicate a sticking float in the fuel bowl or clogged fuel filter screens. If it does fill the jar pretty quickly, then I would look at the coil next. The coil on the front-mount distributor is known to be fragile and temperamental. Replacement coils from the "land of almost right" are also known to fail early. Have you replaced yours lately, or did the seller tell you that they had just tuned it?

Re: Tractor stalling
I tend to agree with Dave. Sounds like you have trash (rust flakes, etc.) in your gas tank. Opening the sediment bowl valve all the way, which is to be used as a reserve gallon to get you back to the barn, also lets the trash that settles around the sediment bowl filter to clog it up. Here are the three fuel filters (screens) that Dave also mentioned:
