  • Fuel bowl leaking
  • My 54 NAA fuel bowl started leaking so I replaced the gasket on it twice, both were cork gaskets and made in India. Still leaked. I then replaced the shut off valve stem with no change. I think it is leaking on the back side of the bowl and the only thing I can think of is to replace the bowl assembly as the retainer clip does not appear to be even on both sides. Has anyone had the same problem or know how I can fix it?

  • You must determine where it is leaking rather than throwing parts at it.

Is it leaking at the bowl gasket? Is it leaking at the valve stem? Is it leaking at the tank/bowl assembly threaded connection? Is it leaking in multiple places?

Some leaks are more problematic than others.

  • It appears to be leaking at the back of the bowl gasket. I ordered 2 gaskets and tried them both and it still leaks at the back of the bowl. Nowhere else, which is why I thought the gaskets were made cheaply and wouldn't seal correctly.

  • Verify that both gasket mating surfaces are clean and free of corrosion. It will probably be necessary to remove the fuel bowl to properly clean the metal surface.

    Use only a cork gasket.

Verify that the bail is not deformed and that the threaded nut workes as it should. Rotary wire wheel works well to clean threads, etc.

Tighten as tightly as possible with fingers. It is still seeps, tighten a bit more after a couple of days using small pliers or channel-locks.

Assuming that you have a glass fuel bowl. If plastic bowl, check gasket surface on a flat surface such as a piece of glass. Ir warped, it will not seal.

  • Thanks. I'll try the wire wheel to clean the threads. I have a glass bowl. I did notice that the bail was not perfectly even on both sides, so if cleaning doesn't work, I'll order a new bail. Thanks again for the advice.
