  • Hiya Gang-
As I was browsing through the original 9N FORD/FERGUSON PLOW BOOK Instruction Manual ( the turquoise cover ) I noticed, on page 5, under the subtitle LUBRICATION, it reads:
"Lubricate the following points daily with grease gun furnished in tractor toolkit: (1) Coulter Hubs (2) Furrow Wheel Hub (3) Furrow Wheel Bracket..."

Now Don Barkley has an original 1940 9N Parts Book that lists the grease gun as part number 9N-1717125-A and my 1941 Parts Book lists it as part number 9N-17125-B. We know the cars and trucks were furnished with the small Alemite grease guns, but does anyone have an original 9N Tractor grease gun? I have an original Dearborn grease gun ( P/N 250001 )but that came later and is the larger one that holds the 16 oz cartdige. If anyone can shed some light on these grease gun part numbers, an actual picture of one would be great, please share this information with us.

  • The 9N-17125-A was a Stewart Warner 4 1/2 ounce, released in 7/39, and could be cad or zinc plated. It was the straight plunger-type with a loop handle similar to the old Model A (and pre-war V-8's) gun. Was 10.31 approx. overall length closed.

The 9N-17125-B was a Lincoln 3 ounce angled-plunger type, released in 7/39, and could be cad or zinc plated. Both were released for service and both were obsoleted in 1945.

There were two economy lever guns which held a lot more grease: in 1943 the 2N-17125-A2 was released. It was a model CZ-2030 from Aro Equipment Corp. and was painted optional on cadmium plate.
The second lever gun was a model 4008 from Alemite with Alemite extension G53987, which had Ford number 2N-17128-A1 assigned to it, released in 1944. It was painted.

Now, I realize you did not ask this, but just to keep all this history all together, the 8N-17125 was released in 11/47. It had a domed-shape cast top with the straight outlet pipe tapped in at an angle. The reservoir plunger handle is a loop shape. Brand unknown. Painted.

  • There is a nice article on tool kits for the V-8 autos and trucks of the thirties in the latest edition of the Early Ford V-8 club of America's magazine. Although this article does not mention tractors, it does have some excellent pictures of the short guns that I mention above. Looks like the same thing was sold to Ford under two different numbers sometimes for commercial simplicity. But if you are holding the gun in your hand, the numbers do not show, so there should be no problem finding a correct gun of the early type, if you are interested in doing that, since there are a lot more out there due to the automotive volume.

Sometimes this magazine has articles that mention our tractors, too. It is an excellent publication.

  • I have seen those in my hunting for Model A parts, and I am under the impression they were from the twenties, but do not know how late they were made. I don't think Ford bought them after the twenties, but do not have any hard info to prove that.
