  • 9N trans dip stick
  • Howdy fellas, my Dad just bought a four digit serial number '39 9N... His tran/diff/hydraulics dip stick is on the transmission it's self; kind of near the gear shifter. My '42 9 and all the one's I have ever seen or worked with (I guess I haven't seen or worked with enough!) had the dip stick on the right side of the tractor, under the seat... when did they make this change and why? Also when did they change from aluminium skins to steel?

    Thanks!

  • I've asked the question several times to guys like Palmer Fossom when was the last Aluminum Hood. I think the best way to ask this is when was the first steel hood, but that doesn't work because of the recall. No one I've talked with has Aluminum after 600 although the purchase order called for 1000 pieces, seems not all were used.

  • Sandy Stewart in Nova Scocia has serial # 680 with an Aluminum hood. He sent me pictures and I have talked to him on the phone.
    Thanks, Jason Grooms

  • One more thing...
  • He may have aquired it since you've talked, but Fossum has 9n617 (roughly the number, may be 614) with original aluminum hood.

  • Most hoods may have been used when you take into consideration the "experimental" tractors and those sent to the Ford farm were all equipped with aluminum hoods. How many those account for, I don't know.

  • My 9N, S/N 9N15015 has an aluminum upper & lower steering housing. The dipstick is on the top of the tranny cover.

  • The earliest ones had no dipstick, top or side.

  • Justin.....the dipstick [9n-7137a] was used up to serial number 47508 according to my parts book.I would guess the reason they changed the position of the dipstick was because it appears to be a safety problem, and would not efectively show the oil level in the hyds.Just my guess.Aluminum hoods were on about the first 200-700 tractors, depending on who you ask.Aluminum steering boxes, dash, grills, doglegs and tranny covers lasted a little longer. If you really want to know about those items, post back and we can suppy you with more defined dates or serial numbers. don b

  • Is your trans top cover cast aluminum? I parted out a 9N last fall that had an aluminum trans cover with dipstick. I don't know the s/n because the block has cracked right across the s/n pad and had been welded. However from the other features of the tractor I kind of figured it was a 1940. That doesn't answer your question, but maybe it helps a little.

I just ran across a 4 digit 9N the other day that still has 32" rear rims, too. I forgot to look for the trans dipstick. I know where it is parked and will go look at it again.

  • The dip stick is a new one on me. By skin if you mean sheet metal, only the first couple thousand made had aluminum sheet metal.
