Sherman trans question

I know that the shermans could be ordered with your tractor and the fartory would send them and the dealer would install them. I somehow remember reading that they were installed at the factory around the time of the 01 series '58 and later. This was indicated with an S stamped after the model number. With my ever mounting paperwork and my CRS I can't remember where I seen it.
So my Question is was this indeed a fact that they were factory installed in the later years?
