Having served 5 years (elected 4 year term, appointed 1 year term) on my local school board I was vocal. Contract negotiations and personnel issues are closed door discussions. However, required open meetings have a public input period. Attend meetings and be vocal.
An issue that my Township had were attendance at "work sessions". As long as there is a majority of board members, it is required to be open to public attendance. No decision votes are allowed. It does NOT mean that you may speak. Attempts to hold board meetings late/early or far away can be challenged as restricting public access.
