DAYTON, Va. (AP) - A family is in mourning after a 15-year-old boy was killed in a farm accident just minutes from the dairy farm where a family of four and a farm hand died in an accident earlier this summer.

Eric James Koogler of Harrisonburg, Va. died shortly before 4 p.m. Monday after police say a piece of farm equipment snapped off a tractor and struck the boy in the torso. Authorities say the youth suffered internal injuries.

Witnesses say Koogler and other farm workers were lining up a tractor and a wagon to unload chopped corn into a silo. That's when a 4-foot-long power shaft connecting the tractor to an auger, came detached from the tractor and hit Koogler. An auger is a long metal tube that moves material. Police are calling it a freak accident.

Dayton is just a few minutes from Bridgewater where, in July, exposure to fumes killed four family members and a farmhand. In that case, a farmer succumbed to fumes while in a manure pit. His family and the farm worker succumbed after trying to rescue him.
