Personally I see no reason to convert one of these tractors to 12 volt unless you have 12 volt equipment, such as a pump, hoist or other to operate. They were designed to operate with the 6 volt positive ground electrical setup.

That said, perhaps you need to relate in detail just what you did in performing this conversion.

You speak of stray 6 volt wiring. I don't understand what you have done that you have stray wiring.

Obviously something is wired incorrectly or you would not have sparks flying.

Since you had no problems on 6 volt, I would discount the mouse possibility.
