Solenoid will pull in the same with either polarity, the starter will rotate the same either polarity. With positive ground + coil post goes to side of distributor, with negative ground the -- post goes to side of distributor.

Uniformity with other modern 12 volt negative ground systems, greater reliability of alternator / internal regulator over generator and mechanical regulator, less confusion with battery charging or jump start are some of the reasons I, personally, prefer an alternator and negative ground system
