  • Painting PTO pulleys
  • I have a gray 2n pto and a red 100 series pto. What colors or surface prep do I paint the pulleys themselves? Thanks, Gary.

  • What kind of vehicle is pulling the trailer in the background?

  • James: It's kinda like Johnny Cash's Cadillac. It's a Doodlebug. Part Model A, Model AA, Cat, Chrysler, unknown tractor hitch, homemade rear tires, "32" Ford front bumper and lights, Brownie second transmission ( Muncie) and many more parts from the farm boneyard. They cut the AA frame, got rid of the rear springs, and front brakes and put a truck rearend under it. These were made after the depression by poor farmers to be used as tractors until the economy improved. I aquired mine from a logging camp in the Idaho panhandle. All Grandfathers need one of these to entertain their Grandkids.

  • Yep, it was common to convert cars to tractors back in the day. Sears Roebuck sold this kit:

  • I love it, Gary. Would love to see a close-up photo of it. I'll post it for you if you have time to send it.

So that's Idaho? Man, gorgeous country out your way!!!

  • I would leave the pulley (the part that comes in contact with the belt) bare, unpainted. The rest I would paint the same color as the tractor it will be used on.

  • Re: Painting PTO pulleys
  • Do you intend to use them, or are they for show? Are they paper pulleys or metal?

  • I agree with Kirk's answer above. For show, paint them whatever color looks cool to you. For work, the friction from the belt will wear it off anyway, so leave at bare metal. When ready to put it away for awhile, you can spray the pulley with some rust preventative.

  • Cool! Would love to see pics if you have them. I've got one metal pulley and a couple paper ones, but all need some level of refurbishment. Don't see too many of the metal ones show up around here.

  • Re: Painting PTO pulleys
  • I have a couple of pics I took this morning. Both are 1 1/8" outputs. The gray goes to a 2N Ford and attached cordwood saw that's painted gray. The red pto goes to a 641 Ford with a 1 3/8" pto so I had to get the reducer shaft and an extension. Both require a bracket that attaches to the pto and saw as the saws don't use a normal toplink.
