  • 8N PTO disengages randomly when running 5ft finish mower
  • I have a 1952 8N. I recently purchased a new Kioti 5 ft finish mower and it worked great for about 15 minutes. The lever for the hydraulics disengages and kills the PTO. I checked it running on my shop floor and after a couple of minutes it will kick it out. So i know it is not just bogging down in thick grass. The hydraulic fluid is at the full line on the dipstick. I have never ran anything on the PTO before on this tractor. I use the plow and blade regularly. The tractor has been in my possession for a few years but my grandparents bought it in '56. I know the PTO has been used not sure how recently. On a side note I changed the sludgy fluid a couple of years ago. i noticed the blade lifted a bit jerky and slower afterwards. It seems like it smoothed out after awhile. Maybe a coincidence maybe part of my issue. Any advice appreciated. thank you.

  • Mike - The PTO shaft might have been pushed into the tractor a bit too far by someone operating the PTO using an implement with a driveshaft that was a bit too long. Perhaps remove the PTO shaft retainer and seal, pull the shaft out a bit to re-seat it, then reinstall the retainer (get a new one if the old is damaged, of course) with a new seal.

  • Detent ball might have a flat spot on it or Groove on rail may be worn. Or nut is loose at the end of the shifter rail that hold the shifter fork on. Would check loose nut first. Can be done thru round cover. Might have to drain some fluid. If nut is tight I would loosen it and turn the shifter rail a half turn and retighten the nut. Try that first to see if that solves your problem. Might also be the pto shaft has a slight twist and is not letting full engagement. I've also seen bungee cords attached to the handle to keep them engaged which is short term and not fixing the problem
