  • Front distributor rebuild
  • I have been looking over some of rebuild instructions for the front distributor just to ensure I get mine right for my 292 9N. It was a basket case with a hole worn in the housing by the fan belt at some time. Had that welded up and I spent time shaping it properly and doing a little sand blasting to blend it in so it hardly shows. This is a very early housing that is aluminum with only a drilled hole at the bottom for a drain.

Anyway one thing I never see mentioned in any article is the internal oil galley in the distributor shaft. This has a threaded plug at the rear and contains a felt wick that carries oil to the weep hole for lubing the front bushing. The ones I have taken apart usually have that weep hole clogged so lube for the front is non existent. I clean out this galley and replace the wick with a quarter-inch one from McMaster that I bought. My only doubt about this is how tight to close the threaded plug, this is staked originally and usually tight to remove, but not sure if it was originally made tight before staking or if 80 years of use just made it so. Oil from the engine probably is intended to pass the threads and keep the wick supplied, so I'm thinking tightening it fully may prevent this refreshment. I fill the galley before installing the plug and re-stake the plug.

    Any thoughts?

  • I have taken the wick out and replaced with one soaked in oil and found screw to be very tight also. I personally can not say for sure, but doubt there was a plan to refurbish oil from engine via a loose screw. One of those lubed for life things.

  • That is an interesting discovery. If Farmer Dan was still with us he probably had encountered that also. Good luck with your rebuild!
