  • Retrofit of a Sherman into a 8N from a 2N
  • So I've got a combo Sherman that is currently in a 2N, how much of a project would it be to transplant it into a 8N? Rocket Science?

  • Will transplant without problems. Make sure to set your preload with the shims if needed.

  • Hardest part is drilling the hole in the case. Other than that it is a straight forward job. Replace the 8N clutch shaft back into the 2N to keep it going. That Sherman has it's own clutch input shaft.
If you keep the Sherman level, it won't lose any oil. If you tip it and oil comes out, prefill with trans oil before installation.
Do not install it, or any other auxiliary transmission, dry. The tractor trans won't be able to fill it before it locks up. Typically it is oil from the gears that works it's way up and keeps it topped off.

  • Go to the Manuals forum here and scroll to Transmissions. There you will find a few manuals on the Shermans you can download. I think they will interchange but ask the Sherman expert, Kirk in NJ to be sure.
