Re: pain mask
When I did my 8N restoration a few years back I sweated a long time over the Ford script as I was bent on getting it right. I think the mask is never very right for a museum quality restoration, but probably ok for normal repaint jobs, etc. What I decided was to find a sign painter who could do it. I contacted one but it didn't work out because they were too busy. I finally found a girl who had a shop painting art on motorcycle helmets (mostly Harley guys who wanted custom stuff). I took my hood over to her and showed her the photo of the first 8Ns coming off the line at the ford plant as that gave a pretty good view of the lettering on the hood. I told her it needed to look like it had been rolled on like lettering on license plates. She charged me $100 and got it just right. Later I was showing it at a local museum show and one of the old guys who had been a designer at the Rouge in the 60's and liked my tractor said that one of the things he noted was that I had gotten the lettering right. He worked on the 64 Falcon when he was there and I figured that was high praise.
