  • Ford 8n with Swapped Engine
  • I've been tinkering with my wife's great grandpa's Ford 8n and found out that it has a swapped engine. The twist is that her mom said it was from a combine or something like that. It seems to be a Ford 8n style engine. Anyone seen anything like this or know where the engine might have come from? I looks just like a 8n engine. The linked image shows the markings between the spark plugs. Thanks. https://photos.app.goo.gl/v8LdVvocDLruaxy66

  • Look under the battery box for a tag riveted to the top of the bellhousing. My dad had an engine out of a Dearborn combine put in to my Grandpa's 8N back in the 60's. It is marked as an industrial engine and is a direct replacement for a tractor. It is still running strong to this day.

  • Thanks! Felt like finding buried treasure. I attached the picture. Do you know if there is any information to derive from the model and serial number?

  • Ryan, we have a manual for your industrial engine in our Manuals library here.

  • If it's a bolt in swap, it's a Ford industrial engine, nearly identical to the 8N engine.

  • The "6050" is the base number for a cylinder head. The riveted label is interesting but I don't know how to interpret it. Is there a serial number located here:

Does it have a front-mount or side-mount (aka angle-drive) distributor?

  • I can't see any stamp markings where the serial number should be. It's a front mount distributor style but has the 2n magneto (Fairbanks FMJ) and assembly currently on it.
I found the engine markings while looking at the casting dates (late 48)

    Thanks for the help.

  • I agree with Dean, then. It's an industrial engine that was swapped in. The Ford industrial engines had many uses back in the day:

  • Thanks Dean and Ed!

Anything special with an industrial engine I should know about?

  • It may have provision for mounting a mechanical fuel pump on the right side.

Other than that, same as tractor engine.
