HiYa Larry-
First up, a hard starting battery indicates a poor, worn, or dead battery. Take it to your local ALT/GEN/STARTER shop and have them test it under load. Bad? Get a good brand (INTERSTATE DEKA EXIDE DURACELL) 6V = GRP AG type; 12V = GRP 35 type. ALL 9N and 2Ns after 1940 were basically the same with only minor steering and charging changes made. There are THREE NEUTRAL SAFETY START PUSHBUTTONS on the Ns. The first was only used on the early 39-40 9Ns with the dash mounted pushbutton. Changed to mount near the shifter cover, it now used a different switch til 47. The 8N Switch is a completely different animal and doesn't interchange with the 9N/2N. Dennis Carpenter repops all 3 switches - SEE LINK. Unless you have an early 39 with the dash mounted switch, you need this one. Verify all other wiring is correct as well and your GEN/ALT has belt tensioning bracket. Your MPCs are a big help for locating parts and drawings.
