DUH!!! Here it is 2:30AM! I'm in Bastrop, Texas Holiday Inn and a jolt of truth just hit me. After a bladder drain and as I crawled back into bed...BOOM! I am wrong about the purpose of the beveled/ramped crank slot. It is to kick the crank handle out when the engine starts! This does prove that you can never be too old to learn about mistaken beliefs.
I HAD to make this entry so that I can go back to sleep.
