Here is an electrical pictogram that applies to your 8N. Note that you do not have a resistor like the front-mount models of Ns.

As Dean mentioned, you are better off with an analog voltmeter when testing on vintage tractors. With your engine running, you should be seeing 7.2 - 7.4 volts. If not, then you are not charging your battery properly.
