If you have your original Ford 6V (autolite) regulator you might try just going through it to clean up and gap the points. Check out voltage regulator repairs on You-Tube, there is plenty there, also there are solid state electronic units (I have one on my 39 9N that works really well) and there is a guy that is on You-Tube that builds solid state units up in Oregon. I cleaned up my 8N regulator, adjusted the points and it has worked well for the last ten years.

I bought one of the after market units fro Just 8N's and it came out of the box with the internal points all bent out of shape. The 6V systems work fine if they are kept in shape occasionally.
