Thanks Tyler,
I used an original pinion that I purchased from John Smith which had little wear. Setting up the backlash was a bit of a chore-I shimmed to get .002-.003" on each sector, but when I put it back together the steering wheel still exhibited about 1/4-3/8" of play, so I took it back apart and shimmed until there was virtually no back lash on either sector with the pinion and the wheel has no play now and turns fully without any binding.
As for the top of transmission housing this was another part that required surgery inside (I got this part separate from the tractor which had a later top with the starter button section ground off). In addition to the usual wear of the pin slot for the shift lever two of the tabs that hold the gear lock (p/n 7229) were broken off (one each end) and the lock itself was missing. I had the later lock from the top I removed but they are longer, so I ended up welding three new tabs in place-one to complete the rear end pair and two new ones at the front area that would accommodate the later lock and then align drill them with a long aircraft drill for the pins. It worked out ok, but I have to use a shorter bolt at the rear of the dash because the forward most tab caps directly under that bolt hole. Unfortunately I neglected to take pictures of that.
