Bob, just remember that when you measure it the length of a v-belt is calculated near the center of the "v", meaning that measuring the outside of the belt (the flat top) will result in a number larger than the official size.
I take a longer belt and cut it. I then put one cut end on an accessible point I mark on a pulley, then bring the long tail of the belt around the pulleys until it reaches the original starting point mark. I mark the belt there and then lay it out flat to measure from the cut end to the mark. This gives a measurement matching the belt manufacturers system.
I may have misunderstood what you are doing and maybe we are doing the same thing!
