I was like you. Before we moved out from the city on ten acres I had never done any welding of any kind. I bought a Lincoln 225 AC stick welder that plugs into 220 and started making messes with it. As time went by I got where I could make things stay together better and reached a confidence level that felt pretty good. During this time I bought a set of oxy acetylene bottles and experimented with that. This was before computers and Ytube, etc. I had some friends who advised and helped from time to time but my learning has been trial and error. I still only have stick welders and I'm satisfied with what I have and my level of ability.
My suggestion is that you should get what you can afford, take a course somewhere if you can and it's available. Find a local welder who is willing to talk to you some (that's the hardest part, I know) and listen and learn. It's not for everyone, so don't get discouraged if things don't work at first.
Oh, I do hope you were referring to your "lovely" wife. When my gets lively I have to hide...
