I first started like Sam did. A course through the local high school metal shop, then bought a cheap wire welder. Once I got good with that I gave it to a friend of mine and bought a cheap MIG welder. Once I got good with that I gave it to another friend of mine and bought a Hobart Handler 140. It takes some time to get the feel of it and make a really good weld, just keep at it and ask for advice where every to can.
