Is it a shallow knock like someone knocking on a wooden door or a deep knock? Where was the noise loudest when you used the engine ear? If you suspect a rod knock, and you have access to a timing light, put the inductive pick-up on a plug wire and pull the trigger to see if the knock and the flash occur at the same time. If they do, you've found the cylinder that is affected. Post back.
