The ring gear fits around the flywheel. Like a ring on your finger. The flywheel is attached to the rear end of the crankshaft. If the flywheel turns, so should the crankshaft, as well as the pulley on the front of it. Unless the crankshaft is broken (highly unlikely) it will turn along w/ the flywheel.....unless the ring gear is loose.

Look in the timing hole. Hit the starter button. See if the ring gear moves w/o the flywheel under it moving.
