keept he front of the deck a couple inches lower thant he rear.. and a medium sharp blade depending upon what you are cutting ( sapplings and brush, then a 1/16 flat is fine ).. clipping shaggy lawn0ish grass.. then sharper like a lawnmower will yeild a pretty decent looking cut.
if it does not have a U flex link ont he toplink connection.. make one..
grease the tail wheel hub, spindle, pto shaft u joints.. and the telescoping shaft itself.. clean and dry lube the pto yoke.
check gearbox for proper lube.. drain and clean and refiill would be my choice on a new to me machine.
and for sure if it is cloudy or emulsified.
don't overfill.. and if it has a vented cap.. make sure it is clean..
check blade shoulder bolts and hub and input and output shaft seals and bearings.. and any blade carrier or stump jumper bolts. inspect blades for cracks..a s well as problem areas in t he deck needing repair.
