  • I ran across an ad for a Ford 501 mower. Ad says it's missing some parts. I have looked at the parts catalog, but wanted some more expert advice on what might be missing. This is the only image the seller has at this moment.

  • Hard to tell from the photo, but there should be brackets that clamp onto both tractor lower lift arms. These help control the sway of the mower as well as lift the outer end of the sickle bar when the mower is raised. These arms are cast and must have a tendency to break. I've seen them broken on mowers in the past.

  • Ford 501 Pitman Arm
  • I didn't buy that one in the picture, but did buy a 501. The pitman arm is busted and it needs a new one. I haven't looked, but I'm sure finding one would be very difficult.

So, does anyone have the length of one so I can make one? Thanks.

  • I'm pretty sure you can still buy a pitman ready made. I haven't needed parts for a while, but was able to get most wear items, knives, guards, pitman, sickle, sickle head. I bought from Sickle Service. There is probably others.

I used to mow in the neighborhood of 60 acres a year with mine. I still have spare parts to replace broken parts. A couple complete pitmans, 3 sickles and I think a new sickle head.

A couple years ago, I bought a 7' rotary mower to pull behind my 45 HP John Deere. Same width but mows a bit faster than my 8N.

Secret keep the sickle sharp and good guards on it. You'll have less broken pitmans. I also cross drill the pitman between clamp bolts. Keeps the wood from splitting around the pitman bolts. Oh and store it under cover. Wood pitmans don't like weather.

  • Thanks. I actually have ran across a few places to buy, ebay, Amazon, TSC, New Holland, etc., all have the pitman arm I need. Thanks, again.

  • Ford 501 Mower Missing Parts
  • Sorry, I meant to have the subject title "Ford 501 Mower Missing Parts" or something to that effect. This forum is not too user friendly, but I'm glad it's here.
