  • Painting sequence
  • Curious about the best order to paint my 8n.
I could paint everything individualy and then assemble as this would allow me to prime and top coat staying in the recoat window (epoxy the single stage). Would likely have lots of touch ups from assembling everything tho. Alternatively I could prime everything and topcoat the hidden or difficult to get at spots, then assemble. This would put me out of the recoat window tho and I would need to sand the primer areas and scuff the exposed top coat before topcoating the entire thing again. I would suspect there is better adhesion if the topcoat goes on within the recoat window tho?
    What is everyones preferred sequence?
    Thanks

  • Depends on what you want and how deep your pockets are. Good paint can be expensive. The PREP work is what is important. A total dismantling of all parts like what John Smith and Marv Baumann did; blasting, priming, and painting is a huge job. When I did my 8N in 2003 I cleaned and removed the dirt and rust as best as I could, no primer, then painted all the cast iron with a can and brush, no thinner. After a few days in the booth drying I then went around and touched up with rattle cans all the spots where brush marks were and any weak or missed areas. I tool all the medium grey sheet metal to a local bump shop to be blasted and painted and it worked out well: they did a good job. Tractor has lasted now for 20 years...

  • Thanks Tim.
This is a total rebuild, not a bolt on it that wasnt taken off. Have the main frame back together, motor, tranny ect all rebuilt and every little piece stripped to bare metal. Wont be perfect but learned a lot reading thru the forums and ready to paint now. Will post some pics if it ever gets finished !

  • Cool beans! Keep us posted on your progress. Take notes on paint brand/type, hardener, thinners, etc and such. Others will want to know.
