  • Seeking help to rebuild 9N distributor
  • I'm looking for someone to rebuild the distributor on my 2N. We think the distributor is not advancing. We have adjusted the points, and replaced the condenser and the coil. It still won't start. Thanks.

  • Can you catch us up on what diagnosis steps you have taken that led you to believe that your distributor needs rebuilding?

Are you getting fuel to the carb?
Are you getting a nice blue spark at all spark plugs?

Per our last discussion here, did you ever run a compression test?

  • Thanks for the questions. We're getting a good spark to all plugs. A compression test shows a weak #2 cylinder. Here are the numbers: 1 -90, 2 - 40, 3 -92, 4 -80. Good fuel flow. We have installed a new coil and a condenser.

  • Your tractor is only running on 3 cylinders. Need to find out the cause of the low compression in #2. Sticky valves, broken rings, etc.

  • Remove the hose/tube at the inlet of the carb.
...Hold your hand against the carb inlet while cranking the engine.
...Do you feel a strong suction?

After hand choking, are the spark plugs wet with fuel?
...If not, there may be a vacuum leak in the intake?

Water in the gas? ...Fresh gas, not old gas that has lost most of its volatility?

The low compression in one cylinder should not prevent the engine from starting.

  • A couple more ?s:

#1 and #3 meet the minimum, and #4 is close enough. Did you run both a dry and then a wet compression test to help indicate rings vs. valves on #2?

Are you still 6v, or have you converted to 12v?

Is the starter cranking, but the engine won't start, or not even cranking?

  • Is Firing order correct? 1.2.4.3 CCW # 3 and 4 are often crossed.

  • Still 6v. Starter is cranking, ending with a wheezing and sometimes a backfire.
We only ran a dry compression test.

  • Not knowing your mechanical abilities, I have to ask.

What testing have you done to determine that is the problem?

    Is this helpful?:

  • I hope one of the better mechanics will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the weights will prevent it from starting. They only move after it starts, from the centrifugal force of the distributor turning,
