  • Ferguson / Dearborn implements
  • This isn't historical fact as much as it is speculation.
I've often wondered what were all the causes for Ford splitting off from Ferguson. We'll never know them all but we can be sure it was at least due somewhat to the money thing.
The 9/2Ns were Fords with the "Ferguson System". From what I've gathered Henry had the right to build the tractor and Harry had the right to build all the implements. So all the early tools for these tractors were badged Ferguson and built by Ferguson, Sherman
or other jobbers. So Harry was making his nickel on each implement sold and Henry was losing out on that expanding and lucrative implement market.
That's why when the split came in 47 Ford immediately started the Dearborn line to compete in the implement market.
Folks who own and collect 9/2Ns really shouldn't be looking for Dearborn implements to pull. They should be looking for Ferguson as these would be "correct" behind their Gray tractor.

  • If I understand this correctly, the 2 bottom Harry Ferguson Inc, made in Dearborn Michigan, was originally gray in color and was made before 1947?????

  • Henry Ford stroke -------- 1938
    Furguson deal ------------ 1939
    Edsel Ford Died ---------- 1943 , may
    Henry Ford retired ------- 1945 , sept
Henry Ford II took over -- 1945 , sept
    Henry Ford Died ---------- 1947 , april 7th
    Ford Furguson split ------ 1947
I know Henry wanted to sell products as cheap as he could to help the little man , everybody else wanted bigger profits.

  • Hey Dogman-
Nice to hear from you. Absolutely correct about the implements. When Henry II took over the business in 1945, first up was to dump Fergsuon because Ford lost money on every N tractor built up til then. Dearborn Motors was born on January 1, 1946 and they already had most suppliers of the Ferguson/Sherman implements on board to begin their tenure as Dearborn implements. Some vendors still supplied to both but there were some design changes needed with the Dearborn line since Ferguson held many patents on some implements. He was shrewd. Covered his a$$ he did. I can't blame him. Many suppliers knew the FORD name would sell so getting on board with Dearborn was not an issue. But for the collector on correctness there are the early Ferguson/Sherman implements BEFORE THE SPLIT and then in 1946 when Ferguson began building his own tractor (from 9N blueprints which he owned too)first in England as the TE20 then in Detroit as the TO20, there was the Ferguson line of implements, AFTER THE SPLIT. For all intents and purposes, any one can be used with any Ford or Ferguson tractor. We could go on for hours about this. Peterson and Beemer have a good book called FORD TRACTOR IMPLEMENTS (ISBN #0-7603-0428-9)which goes into some history and lists many of the Ferguson, Dearborn, and Ford implements.

  • It was a whole lot deeper than that. Ford built the tractor, Ferguson licensed the system and was the sole tractor distributor and supplied most all of the implements and parts. Ford did produce some early implements, ie the early plows. One of the larger causes of the split was indeed money but the fact that Ferguson was making more than Ford with his exclusive distributor status really ruffled feathers in the corporate headquarters too. Fact being Ford was on his last legs and gone when the 8N came out left the next in line a chance to get the tractor operations on the path to making a profit. The split left if I recall correctly, Ford with 3 distributorships (they refered to them as sales districts) and Ferguson with 4, all Foreign distribution including Canada was not controled by Ford Tractor but strangely it was done by the Ford Corporate HQ's (the automobile folks). Ford Motor tried but did not gain control of all distributorships until the early 1960's. Harry had his fingers in the pie much longer than Ford Mptor would like to have us believe.

Correct, (most) implements for the 2N/9N would indeed have been either Ford or Ferguson branded early gray ones, however in my book any OEM Ford implement would be correct on any Ford Tractor as it could have been purchased for the unit at any date as needed or afforded.

  • Ultradog:
    I agree.
I have my dad's 1944 2N (bought new), all the impliments are Ferguson with the exception of the rear scoop bucket. That he purchased from Montgomery Wards. My 1950 8N and 1953 Jubilee are sporting a Dearborn 2-bottom plow and single gang wheel harrow. Other Dearborn attachments to follow as they are found.
