I would remove the manifold and check to see if the valves are free and closing all the way . Sometimes they get stuck if the tractor sits for years . WD40 the valve stems and blow air into the cylinder to listen for blow by on the valves .
Electronic Ignition is a great upgrade . EI does not like electrical spikes so be careful if you jump start another rig or try to start a low battery with a heavy charger .
