What is the ammeter doing all this time? Does it show a charge, discharge, or nothing at all? I don't think polarizing the genny is the issue. If ammeter is working, as suggested, try motoring the genny to determine if that is the problem. If genny motors, then problem lies within the voltage regulator, battery, or wiring. You can take all of your components to your local trusted starter/alternator shop and they will bench test it all usually for free. 6V batteries don't last that long -5/6 years average for a good one, 2 years for economy versions. A genny rebuild is not that expensive and cheaper than buying a 'new' Chinese model. If all check good
(your starter guy can tweak the VR for optimum performance with your genny) then problem is in wiring -something is shorting out to ground. If genny is 3-Brush/3-Wire style, don't mess with 3rd brush screw on back once it is tweaked. Post back on what you find...
