Not necessarily the generator.......could be generator, regulator, or connections. Doing his 'cable removal' test is more or less OK with DC generators, but it does cause voltage spikes, which if done on anything with modern SS electronics (which includes alternators)will often cause permanent/fatal damage to such electronics.
