I finally completed the great clutch repair saga on my '47 8N. Which I've been putting together as a work tractor for a customer. As you may remember, with the clutch that was in the tractor, I could not shift into gear with the clutch pedal depressed. Here is what the clutch pressure plate that was in the tractor looked like.
Turns out, after replacing the pressure plate with a new, remanufactured plate, I encountered motor problems, too. So, I took a motor from a donor tractor and put it in place of the original motor.
This is what the tractor looked like after the motor transplant, yesterday.
Today, I put all of the engine's components back onto the block. The tractor started an shifted like a new machine.
My guess is that the shifting problem may have been caused by weak springs in the original pressure plate. But, that's just a guess.
Now, I have a few small oil leaks from some fittings that I have to fix. One of the leaks is at the governor/timing cover interface. There is a gasket that's been installed, but it still leaks. Should I use some sort of gasket sealant there?
Thanks for all the advice that was given. It's nice to finally have a tractor that moves under it's own power. Trudy and I are a bit weary of manhandling this thing.
