This to me sounds like your float is sticking or the seat of the needle valve has some trash in it and lets fuel flood the carb. My 52 8N was doing this and it would only start with the air cleaner disconnected and with no choke, or choke for just 1/2 a second. Fixed it with cleaning the needle and seat. HTH.. S.
