How long have you have the machine? Do you really know it needs an overhaul? People not adept at diagnosis often opt for a full rebuild as a shotgun method figuring it'll take care of whatever the problem really is, when often there are just one (or two, or three) easily fixed problems that make the machine seem in much worse shape than it is. Sticky rings, grabby clutch, clogged carburetor or governor that needs refreshing come to mind. Even if the problems are more serious, there are always stopgaps like the dreaded in frame rebuild that are considerably cheaper and may do the job.
Most of us n-series owners do not work our machines long enough or hard enough to need a perfectly running machine with a like-new engine. As long as the machine can do the job - in my case, running reliably for 4 or 5 hours a week in the warmer months - we are happy.
